The Level 2 Award in Understanding Substance Misuse is a recognised qualification suitable for anyone who wishes to increase their knowledge around substance misuse and addiction, particularly counsellors, those who work within the helping professions and the substance misuse field.
Tutors Lucy Rogers and Matthew Stainer have both personal and professional experience and knowledge of addiction and substance misuse having worked within the field for ten and eight years respectively. An experiential course, students are encouraged to bring their own experience and actively be involved in discussion resulting in a very real, informative learning environment.

A one year Certificate - Guided Learning Hours: 120 hrs.
This course will provide you with some of the basic counselling skills needed to help others. Through teaching and practical exercises, you will develop your listening and communication skills which may assist you in your current role. Learning about the field of counselling may help you to decide whether you would like to pursue further training towards becoming a qualified counsellor
At the end of the course there is an external assessment that involves watching a short film of a counselling session then answering questions to demonstrate your understanding of the counselling process. The external assessment paper will be awarded a pass or fail. Students are also assessed on their classroom participation and their journal entries.
Students who pass the course can progress to the next level of counselling training, which is the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies.
It is not necessary for students to be in personal therapy to be on this course.

Entry Requirements:
Candidates must have completed Level 2 counselling skills and be aged 19yrs or over.
Course Objective:
The course focuses on counselling theory, ethics and mental health and prepares students to work as a professional counsellor in an agency setting.
This qualification does not lead to employment, though it is designed as a practitioner training for professional counselling qualifications and could lead to employment in a related field.
Through teaching and practical exercises, you will learn more about the field of counselling theory which will help you to decide whether you would like to pursue further training to Level 4.

A two year Diploma - Guided Learning Hours: 30 weeks at 5.5 hrs per week plus 10 workshops at 3 hrs = 175 GLH. Per Year. Total Diploma GLH 420.
Entry Requirements:
Must have completed Level 2 counselling skills & Level 3 counselling studies or equivalent qualifications (RPL). Min age 19.
Target candidates:
Individuals who wish to complete their training to enable them to work with clients in an agency setting.

Course Objective:
This qualification is intended for candidates who want to train to become a counsellor working in a counselling service agency. Successful completion of this course means that the trainees will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service within the context of an agency's service framework.
Theoretical Model:
This is an Integrative Course and as such will look at a number of Theoretical Models. Students will be encouraged to select those models that they would like to integrate into there own Integrative Model.
Placements:
There is a minimum requirement of 100 hours formally-contracted counselling (one-to-one) with at least 5 different clients in an agency setting.
Cancellations and non-attends do not count towards this total. Students will be expected to research and arrange their own placements. The centre will give guidance on what constitutes an acceptable placement . In addition to the guidance given by the Centre , students might find the internet a good source of information on finding placements, there are resources at the centre available for this purpose.
NOTE: Students will have up to one year after the end of the course to complete their placement hours.
Supervision:
Students are required to have clinical supervision for their agency client work. We recommend that the candidate’s agency provides appropriate clinical supervision to meet BACP supervision guidelines for trainees – currently a minimum of 1½ hours individual supervision per month (or the equivalent if in group supervision) or 1 hour of supervision for every 8 hours of client work. In addition, candidates will have 30-50 hours group training supervision as part of the course.
Personal Therapy:
There is a minimum of 15 hours per year personal therapy during the life of the course, in certain circumstances it might be advisable for this to be extended further depending on the individual circumstances of the student. This aspect will be fully discussed with students during one to one meetings with tutors as the course progresses.
